Musk created xAI as an alternative to OpenAI, the company he helped found but later distanced himself from over ideological differences. Now, The Wall Street Journal reports, xAI is planning to launch an app as soon as December that could go head-to-head with OpenAI’s ChatGPT as it races to scale up.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Elon Musk's AI company xAI will be releasing a standalone consumer app. It will work similar to the ChatGPT app and give users access to Grok from their phones. There doesn't seem to be a huge rush,

xAI is looking to compete in an increasingly crowded AI space dominated by companies including OpenAI, Anthropic, and Big Tech companies including Google and Microsoft. Apple, the world's largest tech company, has also entered the AI space with its gradual launch of Apple Intelligence on some of its devices.

Musk has offered investors who backed his $44 billion Twitter acquisition, a 25% stake in xAI as a gesture of gratitude, according to FT. This could benefit backers like Fidelity, Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison, and Twitter founder Jack Dorsey, from the start-up's massive increase in value through their shares in xAI.
